Taking your interior style up a notch does not always mean a complete redesign. Changing the aesthetic of a space can also be achieved through the addition of key pieces and new accessories. This redesign of a client’s family room illustrates how I transformed the style of this room to what I would describe as “Bohemian Chic”. I will also share a few tips on how we achieved the updated look and a video to walk you through the process.
Step 1: Consider the Room Layout – Open up spaces by re-orienting furniture. Here we kept the sofa, coffee table, side tables, artwork and some personal pieces, but made some key changes. One of the most significant changes was replacing the chunky side chairs with smaller scale chairs which opened up the room from the points of entry.
Step 2: Brighten Up the Space – Replacing the dark area rug with a light, textured rug and changing the window treatments to a gauzy, translucent fabric lighten up the room.
Step 3: Add Interesting Objects – Create a “collected” feeling by sourcing unique pieces that add sculptural interest to the room.
Step 4: Accessorize with Intention! – Careful selection, curation and placement of accessories is the final and most important step in adding your personal style to a space. My basic guidelines for accessorizing include:
- Mix contrasting elements: colors, textures and materials
- Play with size, scale and shape
- Add natural elements as a neutral base to blend with other colors
- Use dark colors to ground spaces and serve to guide your eye around a room
- Break up large surface areas with layers
Some examples of how I accessorized this space are found on the coffee table, the accessories on the etagere and the assortment of pillows throughout the room.
I hope you will take a few minutes to watch the video and get a better feel of this “Bohemian Chic” styled space and additional tips on taking your style up a notch.
Happy styling!
