I recently completed a redesign of a home in Summit, NJ that was featured in East Coast Home & Design‘s article “Style Overhaul: Antique and Modern Mix in New Jersey” . When I first met with the homeowners, they wanted to update the look of their home which was decorated in a more formal style. I often see young couples design their first home in a traditional manner and as their tastes evolve, they are looking for a more comfortable and inviting aesthetic. After discussing the project and walking through the home, I found there were many things in the house I wanted to work with – the classic moldings, trim, paneling, built-ins, window treatments, and a wonderful collection of antiques and unique furniture pieces. So instead of starting from scratch and doing a full scale redesign, for this project we decided to integrate some of the home’s existing architectural details and the owner’s antiques and refinish, reupholster, reframe or relocate to keep the client’s personal stamp on their home.
If you are considering a renovation or re-design project, here are my 5 basic tips on ways to look at updating the style and feel of your home:
This project is a perfect opportunity to take you on a journey of how we transformed a home by walking through the before and after photographs and pointing out how we redesigned each room by editing the existing decor and updating the design. The end result was very much in keeping with the client’s taste and personality – my ultimate goal for every project.
